XIX Edition of the Harvest in the Pompeii vineyards

Vineyard of the Casa del Triclinio estivo (entrance to Piazza Anfiteatro)

Thursday 25 October 2018 - 10.00 am

The ritual harvesting of the grapes of the vineyards in the archaeological area is proposed as usual, Thursday, October 25 at the Casa del Triclinio estivo to celebrate the 19th edition of Pompeii harvest, the result of a rigorous scientific study of ancient techniques of viticulture.

Best wishes toast at 10.00 a.m. with the General Manager Massimo Osanna and Prof. Piero Mastroberardino to celebrate the consolidated collaboration with the Mastroberardino Winery which, within the framework of the studies of botany applied to archeology conducted by the Research Laboratory Applied to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, over the years it has taken care of preliminary research, of the plant and of the cultivation of the ancient Pompeii vineyards, as well as giving life to the precious "Villa dei Misteri" wine.

This year wine lovers will be able to taste the Villa of the Mysteries Vintage 2011, the first production of the historical olive oil of Piedirosso and Sciascinoso, to which is added the first harvest of Aglianico.
In fact, 2007 widened the project with the identification of additional areas to be restored to the vineyard, entirely destined to the cultivation of the noble Aglianico vine - one of the most representative varieties of viticulture in antiquity - naturally suitable for the production of great red wines long aging. The form of breeding selected for this purpose was the tree, which is best suited, in the microclimate of Pompeii, to the Aglianico vine, in a perfect union between the Greek vine ("Vitis Hellenica") and the typical Hellenic short pruning .

The project idea, born in 1994, first concerned a limited area of excavations, to then expand and reach today to affect 15 areas of vineyards located all in Regiones I and II of ancient Pompeii (including Foro Boario, Casa del Triclinio estivo, Domus della Nave Europa, Caupona of Gladiator, Caupona of Eusino, the Garden of Fuggiaschi, etc.) for a total extension of about one and a half hectares and for a potential production of about 40 quintals per hectare.
The Villa dei Misteri wine is a unique way to tell and make known Pompeii with its culture and its ancient tradition and as a place of appreciation and, at the same time, to defend the territory, the landscape and the environment.

At the end of the harvest, journalists are invited to move to Villa Arianna for the inauguration at 12.00 of the project DIGGING UP ATLAS OF THE BLANK HISTORIES by Lara Favaretto.
