The Pompeii sustainable management model

Monitoring and maintenance of cultural heritage using a processual approach

The UNESCO World Heritage site Pompeii (Southern Italy) is of inestimable value, and its preservation and protection represent a major challenge. However, effectively protecting and developing the site requires more than just a series of technical solutions. Rather, to succeed in further developing and preserving the unique values of Pompeii, a processual and integrative approach is needed.

The Great Pompeii Project (GPP, 2012-2022), one of the largest ‘rescue’ interventions carried out in the field of archaeology, has demonstrated that a key to success is the organisational structure and the integrated management of activities relating to protection, research, conservation, access, and public outreach.

In order to maintain and further improve the quality standards achieved by the GPP, we have developed a “Sustainable Management Model” for Pompeii. Our underlying assumption is that only a sustainable and responsible use of economic and human resources will guarantee the effective preservation and development of the site in the long run. Our model aims to integrate approaches apt to make Pompeii more self-sufficient and to reduce pressure from over-tourism, part of this being a specific maintenance program that involves a set of strategies for continuous multi-scale and multi-level monitoring of the condition of the site.
