The UNESCO World Heritage Site no. 829, ‘Archaeological Areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata’, has initiated a series of educational activities aimed at promoting and sharing the values of the UNESCO sites. It also includes a more participatory enhancement process recommended by the Management Plan of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the related buffer zone. In particular, the funds provided by Italian Law No. 77/2006 have enabled the launch of the project ‘Educational Itinerary of the sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Torre Annunziata, and Naples, for the beginning of an educational offer for young Citizens of the UNESCO sites’. The project targets junior high school students and aims at making the local citizens aware of a ‘community of heritage’, starting with the younger generations. Through a specially designed, educational itinerary children will be put in direct contact with professional archaeologists, architects and conservation experts from the Archaeological Parks of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, who deal with this heritage on a daily basis. The result of this project will be a guide and a map of the three sites the contents of which will be developed by the students as part of an editorial project with the participation of the celebrity guest Geronimo Stilton. Indeed, the popular mouse will be the big star attraction of this project to be launched in the Vesuvian archaeological sites for the first time. Geronimo Stilton has been chosen as celebrity ‘spokesperson’ for the project especially for the moral values he represents and for being well loved among children.
