In 1997 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (CONF 208 VIII C), on the basis of criteria (iii)(iv)(v), added serial site no. 829 “Archaeological areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata” to the World Heritage List on the grounds that the sites represent “complete and living evidence of a society and everyday life at a precise moment in time and have no parallel elsewhere in the world”.
