12TH JULY – CONVENTION IN MEMORY OF ENZO LIPPOLIS – FIRST DAY

Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II (Convention Centre, Via Partenope 36)

Enzo Lippolis, a tenured full professor of Archaeology at the University La Sapienza in Rome where he was Director of the Department of Sciences of Antiquity, passed away suddenly on 3rd March 2018. It has been a great loss for the archaeological field and the entire Italian cultural world. Four months after his death, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii organised the convention ‘Studium Erga Populum Studium Erga Sapientiam’, in memory of Enzo Lippolis. The two-day convention was not only geared towards the scientific community. It was aimed at discussing the research activities and the latest discoveries made at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, to which Professor Enzo Lippolis had given his commitment.
During the first day, a funerary monument recently found in the necropolis of Porta Stabiana was presented. The headstone, found in 2017 during renovation work on the state-owned buildings of San Paolino, is thought to have belonged to Gnaeus Alleius Nigidius Maius.
At the University of Naples, the main aspects of the monument inscription in memory of the deceased were discussed.

The second day of the convention took place at the excavation site in Pompeii, San Paolino Building (Via Plinio 4).
