Overlooking the open space at the intersection of Vicolo delle Nozze d’Argento and Vicolo dei Balconi, the restaurant features the traditional L-shaped counter embellished with a lively painting, the longer side bearing the image of a Nereid riding a hippocampus alongside darting dolphins, in a peaceful marine setting with supernatural beings benevolent to the lives of men. On the shorter side, which angles towards the outer part of the room, we see a depiction of activities undertaken within the shop itself, with a small figure moving between the various services offered by the thermopolium, as a kind of inviting advertisement to attract the attention of passers-by. The discovery of a group of amphorae set down right in front of the counter further enhanced the effect of the image of the shop. The last section of the counter is decorated by scenes of still life with depictions of animals, some of them butchered, which were sold in the restaurant itself. Bone fragments found in containers embedded in the counter, which held foodstuffs intended for sale, are an indication of the great variety of products used in the preparation of dishes; several belong to some of the animal species depicted - the images of the two mallard ducks depicted upside down, and the rooster - however the image of a dog on a leash serves as a warning, along the lines of ‘Cave canem’.
