POMPEI è MUSICA SECOND SEASON OF CONCERTS AT THE AMPHITHEATRE OF POMPEII FROM 27 JUNETO 5 AUGUST 2025
14 live events with international and Italian artists ranging from classical music to pop
From 27 June to 5 August 2025, the season of musical events at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii kicks off with fourteen live concerts in the amphitheatre featuring famous artists from Italy and abroad. It opens with two concerts by the tenor Andrea Bocelli, and continues in late July with the concert by the conductor Riccardo Muti. This is followed by the festival “BOP – Beats of Pompeii. Dove la musica è cultura”, which features a star-studded line up of artists of various genres and backgrounds performing at the amphitheatre: Nick Cave, Jean-Michel Jarre, Wardruna, Ben Harper, Bryan Adams, Dream Theater, Stefano Bollani, Gianna Nannini, Antonello Venditti, Serena Rossi and Jimmy Sax. It promises to be a wonderful journey through a wide range of genres and styles and brings together music, tourism, culture and history in a unique setting.
The amphitheatre of Pompeii,a place that is a symbol of ancient and modern history, will become a vibrant venue, teeming with life, thanks to music. It washere, back in 1971, thatPink Floyd played a historic concert behind closed doors, making the amphitheatre one of the most iconic settings for live music in the collective consciousness.
The season of concerts is sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the ArchaeologicalPark of Pompeii, in conjunction with the Pompei city council andRegione Campania(the regional government of Campania). Theartistic director of the BOP festival is Giuseppe Gomez while the technical organisation is provided by two companies: Blackstar Entertainment andFast Forward.
" Pompei è Musica’ will not just provide the opportunity to enjoy performances by artists of the calibre of Jean-Michel Jarre whose album Oxygènemarked a watershed for me and an entire generation, combining melodies and the use of synthesisers. Ideally, it will also represent theunion of cultural heritage and cultural activities without which these marvellous places cannot come to life and breathe. I hope that Pompeii becomes a model for the whole of Italy and an icon the world over partly for this reason". This was the statement released by Gianmarco Mazzi,Undersecretary of State for Culture with specialresponsibility forthe music sector.
“With UNESCO we often refer to intangible heritage, including, obviously, music”, underlines Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the Park Director.“ However, in reality, all cultural heritage should be considered intangible, even archaeological sites and monuments. This is because their tangibledimension, which naturally needs to be cared for and monitored, simply provides the basis for their tangible, or as we used to say, their “spiritual” dimension; in other words, their capacity to transform our lives and our experience of the world through the encounter with the Other, both in history and the present. As a consequence, bringing music to the site of Pompeii is not just a supplementary initiative, but an integral part of our project designed to safeguard, investigate and ensure accessibility to archaeological heritage. We hope it can provide a model for many other cultural sites which, despite their beauty, are not always experienced by the community as a whole and the public in their transformative dimension. If we truly believe in culture, we need to make it accessible to everyone.”
“The encounter between music and archaeology has always fascinated artists, musicians, philosophers andwriters, especially in order to understand the connection between art and sound, between colours, emotions and musical notes. Demonstrating that it is indeed possible to match the art of music with the art of frescoes, the ancient domus and mosaicswas also one of the theories that made the history of world music: Pink Floyd in the amphitheatre of Pompeii. It was also the idea of one of the most important exponents of abstract art, Wassilly Kandinsky who argued that painting is an art that closely resembles music and is therefore capable of conveying emotions in abstract form, where colour, in place of sound, attracts the attention of the observer without necessarily narrating or describing aspects of objective reality. These are the themes that underpin “Bop-Beats of Pompeii”, a festival where archaeology encounters the music of international artists to give life to a unique, unrepeatable performance”- stated Carmine Lo Sapio, Mayor of Pompeii.
“BOP-Beats of Pompeii”, adds Peppe Gomez, the artistic director of the festival who has plenty of experience working in Campania, “is also a reflection of the vibrant cultural lifeof Naples andCampania which are becomingincreasingly important players on the international arts scene. The festival offers an opportunity to promote the territory, providing incentives for local tourism and supporting the local economy.”
It is an opportunity not to be missed for anyone who wants to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience immersed in music, history and pathos.
