STARTING FROM 15 NOVEMBER, POMPEII TO BRING IN NOMINATIVE TICKETS AND A DAILY LIMIT OF 20,000 ADMISSIONS
As of 15 November, the tickets of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii will be personalised and will have the names of visitors on them. There will also be a daily limit of 20 thousand admissions, subdivided into time slots during the summer.
This innovation comes in the wake of record numbers of visitors this summer with an influx of tourists never seen before in the history of the site, with over 4 million visitors, and peaks of over 36,000 admissions on one of the first Sundays of the month when there is free entry to Pompeii.
“We are working on a series of projects designed to mitigate anthropogenic pressure on the site, which can pose risks both to people, for example in the case of an earthquake, and to cultural heritage, which is so unique and fragile,” stated Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the Park director. “In particular, we are working to extend the accessible areas within the ancient city and to develop other sites in the territory, including Boscoreale, Torre Annunziata, Villa dei Misteri, Civita Giuliana and Stabiae. We are focusing on slow, sustainable and enjoyable tourism, which is not mass tourism and, in particular, is spread over the whole territory around the UNESCO site which is full of cultural gems waiting to be discovered. The measures, which are designed to manage the influx of visitors as well as to ensure the safety and personalisation of the visit, all form part of this strategy. Experience has shown that only those who focus on quality can achieve sustainable growth and we are striving to do this. At the same time, we are seeking to help the territory and operators in the tourism sector who are working in a context that has undergone far-reaching changes since the pandemic and will continue to change in the future. These changes need to be tackled in an agreed and proactive way rather than be passively endured. During this start-up phase, we shall closely monitor the situation and shall continue the dialogue with all the stakeholders in order to make any necessary adjustments.”
As of 15 November 2024, the following measures will come into effect:
